Aquatic Physical Therapy is an exciting new area of physical therapy that is rapidly gaining support by physicians and surgeons as an effective alternative to traditional “land-based” physical therapy. Aquatic Physical Therapy uses the principles and goals of physical therapy in a water environment to control swelling, improve circulation and provide smooth and consistent resistance for strengthening. Buoyancy allows for earlier weight bearing and functional training (like walking or running) than is achieved on land for patients who cannot tolerate full weight bearing. Turbulence provides resistance and increased work for progressive exercise and balance training. Most patients find that water pool therapy is a very enjoyable way to regain their strength, balance and flexibility.
Patients do not have to know how to swim to participate in aquatic therapy. Our program differs from “pool aerobics” in that all participants receive a complete physical therapy evaluation by a physical therapist with specific goals and objectives identified for their condition. Treatments are individualized for each patient and each session is limited to four or less participants. Patients are regularly reassessed to make sure the specific goals of each patient are being obtained. Generally the patient will be transitioned to land-based therapy as their condition improves.
Our pool is maintained at 85º and a full Jacuzzi spa is also available for pre and post therapy relief. Full locker and shower facilities are available.
Patients who would benefit from aquatic physical therapy include, but are not limited to:
- Post surgical patients including knee and hip replacement
- Arthritic patients
- Balance-impaired patients
- Back pain patients
- Chronic pain patients
- Obese/overweight patients
